WHAT IS A CPU?

The CPU, or Central Processing Unit, acts as the control center for a computer or server, as it is responsible for issuing and carrying out commands. Without the CPU, the other components of the device would not be able to receive instructions and the device would not function. The CPU follows the instructions of computer programs to direct the other components of the system in order to input, store, and output data. It is the brain of the device, enabling it to execute commands and perform tasks.
HOW DOES A CPU WORK?
The CPU contains an integrated circuit, also known as a chip, which is made up of millions of electrical components that make up the hardware of the CPU. These components are connected to metal pins that allow for the transfer of data in and out of the CPU, enabling it to execute commands, retrieve data, and store files as directed by computer programs.
WHERE IS THE CPU LOCATED?
The CPU is typically housed in a socket on the motherboard for protection, as CPUs are delicate. The socket may be difficult to spot as it is often located under a larger component called a heatsink, which helps to cool the CPU and prevent overheating. To access the CPU, the heatsink must first be removed and the socket released. The picture below illustrates two heatsinks on top of two CPUs as an example.
