Although more costly than unmanaged switches, the added control, flexibility, and security offered by managed switches are often crucial for many businesses.
Smart Switches
A smart switch is like a managed switch in terms of the security, control, and features provided. However, it restricts the customization options available to the administrator. While they provide more options than unmanaged switches, they take away some of the freedom of configuration from the administrator and are not ideal for networks that require specialized setup, typically large and complex networks.
Smart switches are usually cheaper and more user-friendly compared to managed switches, making them a good option for small to medium-sized offices or business networks.
WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A NETWORK SWITCH?

1. Speed: When choosing a switch, consider the speed requirements of your network. If there are many users constantly transferring large amounts of data, it’s wise to invest in a more costly switch that can handle the high demand. Conversely, for smaller networks with lower demand, less expensive switches can still effectively serve your needs.
2. Budget: What’s your budget for the network switch? This factor is crucial in selecting the best choice for you at a suitable cost. Think about purchasing refurbished switches, which are cost-effective yet perform just as well as new ones and can be customized to fit your requirements.
3. Power: For a switch that not only provides network connectivity but also powers devices, look for one with Power over Ethernet (PoE) ports. Although it may be more expensive, it is often essential for many businesses.
4. Stackability: If your business is expanding and increasing in size and demand, stackability is a significant aspect to take into account. Stackable switches enable you to connect multiple switches together and manage them as a single entity. This enables you to grow your network without having to replace equipment; instead, you can easily expand your IT infrastructure.
5. Ports: What is the number of ports required? This is dependent on the number of devices you intend to connect to the switch. As the number of devices increases, so does the need for more ports, so keep this in mind.
